Dangogae Martyrs’ Shrine is located on a small hill just a five-minute walk from Yongsan Electronics Market. The shrine honors nine canonized saints and one beatified martyr who died there. In 1839, near the end of the Gihae Persecution, ten Catholic men and women were martyred at this site. They were originally scheduled for execution at Seosomun, but merchants in the Seosomun area requested that the execution site be moved so they could hold the important Seollal holiday market. As a result, the executions were relocated to Dangogae, and the martyrs are now commemorated here.
The shrine was created with the theme “The Pain of Wild Roses, the Fragrance of Plum Blossoms.” The thorns of wild roses symbolize the suffering of persecution, while the fragrance of plum blossoms represents God’s grace. The 14 Stations of the Cross at Dangogae follow the journey of Blessed Maria Yi Seong-rye, allowing visitors to reflect on both the path of suffering and the glory of martyrdom.
Due to the tragic stories of the martyrs and the panoramic view overlooking central Seoul, Dangogae Martyrs’ Shrine attracts a steady stream of pilgrims throughout the year. It is also close to other martyrdom sites and landmarks such as Saenamteo Church and Yongsan Family Park.
The shrine is located about a 15-minute walk from Exit 5 of Hyochang Park Station on Seoul Subway Line 6.
