2025.10.18　 Gangwondo　

Gangwondo 1758-22 Haean-ro, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do Jumunjin Port, one of the main fishing ports on the east coast, is home to over 350 fishing boats. The East Sea, where the warm and cold waters meet, is excellent for catching many different types of fish including lance fish, pollack, herring, and anchovy, as well as squid. Fish caught in the area is often served fresh or cooked at nearby seafood restaurants.

Jumunjin Lighthouse (주문진 등대)

Gangwondo 24-7, Yetdeungdae-gil, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do Established on March 20, 1918, Jumunjin Lighthouse was the first lighthouse in the Gangwon region. The lighthouse is 3 meters in diameter at the base and 10 meters in x_height with white mortar covering the exterior wall. The building shows the early structure of Korean lighthouse architecture, which is a great value in terms of the nation’s architectural history. The light signal blinks at 15-second intervals and can be seen from 37 kilometers away. The original lighthouse was destroyed during the Korean War but was rebuilt in 1951.

Jumunjin Breakwater (주문진 방사제)

Gangwondo 1609, Haean-ro, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do Jumunjin Breakwater was built to protect the coastline from the effects of erosion and longshore drift. It became a popular attraction after its first appearance in the television drama "Guardian (2016)" as many visitors look forward to taking photos of a scene reanactment from the drama.

Jumunjin Beach (주문진해변)

Gangwondo 210, Jumunbuk-ro, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do Jumunjin Beach is located in the northernmost part of Gangneung, and is a great place for summertime family vacations due to the beach's shallow water. The sound of calm waves will chase the heat away, while the dense pine forest provides cool shade against the sun. Visitors can take advantage of the amenities along the beach as well, such as the forest fitness park, family hotels, and the nearby campsite.

Jukseoru Pavilion (삼척 죽서루)

Gangwondo 37 Jukseoru-gil, Samcheok-si, Gangwon-do Jukseoru Pavilion, estimated to have been built around 1266, is one of the eight major attractions of Gwandong District in middle eastern Korea collectively known as Gwandong Palgyeong (eight famous sites). Sitting on the edge of a cliff overlooking Osipcheon Stream, the pavilion incorporates the rocks on the cliff as cornerstones, with a five-girder paljak (ancient-style roof). Then, there are 26 signboards hanging from the rafters of the pavilion. The signboards contain inscriptions offamous ancient scholars such as 'Jeilgyeongjeong' ('The best riverside pavilion'; 1662) by Heo Mok, 'Jukseoru' and 'Gwandong Jeilru' ('The best pavilion in Gwandong'; 1711) by Yi Seong-jo, and 'Haeseon Yuhui Jiso' ('The place that marine gods enjoy'; 1837) by Yi Gyu-heon. Others who have left their mark include King Sukjong (1674-1720), King Jeongjo (1776-1800) and Yulgok YiYi (1536-1584). Evidently, Jukseoru Pavilion has served as an inspiration since its establishment, and continues to inspire visitors today through the stunning view of its surrounding nature.

Jukdojeong Pavilion & Jukdo Observatory (죽도정&죽도 전망대)

Gangwondo 1-1 In-gu-ri, Hyeonnam-myeon, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do Jukdojeong Pavilion is located on Jukdo Island in Yangyang, which is a small island with an average circumference of 1 kilometer. The beautiful scenery of lush pine and bamboo forest, with the emerald blue sea in the background, makes it one of the “Yangyang Best 10” spots. It is one of the best places to watch the sunrise on the East Coast. Located next to Jukdojeong Pavilion, the Jukdo Observatory offers a panoramic view of Jukdo Island. Although it was originally an island, it is now connected to the mainland. The walking path around the island is a great place for visitors to take a leisurely stroll along the sea while also enjoying the lush green forest.

Jucheongang Recreational Forest (주천강자연휴양림)

Gangwondo 115, Gangbyeon-ro yeongnang 6-gil, Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon-do Jucheongang Recreational Forest encompasses a forested area of 2.3 million square meters near Jucheongang River in Hoengseong, Gangwon-do and is the nation’s first large-scale riverside forest. Located only 4 kilometers away from the Dunnaegyo Intersection of the Yeongdong Expressway, the recreational forest is easily accessible from Seoul. With Chiaksan National Park to the southwest and ski resorts to the northeast, the recreational forest is well-equipped with leisure facilities. It is the perfect place for large and small gatherings among family and friends. Facilities include the Forest School (workshop center), Forest House, Forest Classroom, water park, mini-soccer field, volleyball court, and work-out center.

Jipdarigol Recreational Forest (집다리골자연휴양림)

Gangwondo 130, Hwaakjiam 1-gil, Sabuk-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do This recreational forest, famous for its clear water and broad-leaved virgin forest, is located at the foot of the Hwaaksan Mountain (1,468 m). The name of Jipdarigol has an amusing legend behind it: a young woman and a man, living on the different sides of a large valley, fell in love with each other and made a straw bridge (“jipdari”) to meet each other. Jipdarigol Recreational Forest of today is a popular destination for summer and fall, thanks to its wonderful valley and beautiful forest. The forest includes accommodations and an open-air deck for day trippers, installed along the valley with a x_width of 8 m2 and 15 m2. It can be used until 19:00, and tents and simple cooking are allowed. However, visitors are prohibited from using charcoal and wood fire, and electric equipment. Other facilities include the walking trail, hiking trails, and suspension bridge.

Jinburyeong Heulli Village (진부령 흘리마을)

Gangwondo 185 Heulli-gil, Ganseong-eup, Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do Jinburyeong Heulli Village, situated near Jinburyeong Pass, is known for its long winters, lasting up for half a year. As a result, the village cultivates highland crops such as chicory and bell peppers and operates pollack-drying fields. Visitors can purchase locally produced wild vegetables, corn, potatoes, medicinal herbs, and honey, or participate in a bell pepper-picking experience. The village is also popular for its local dishes, especially those featuring chicken.

Jiktangpokpo Falls [National Geopark] (직탕폭포 (한탄강 국가지질공원))

Gangwondo 94, Jiktang-gil, Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do Jiktangpokpo Falls is location in the middle of Hantangang River, which runs through town of Dongsong-eup in Cheorwon. Unlike other falls, Jiktangpokpo Falls is not tall, but wide instead as the 3 meter-high falls stretch almost 60 meters from bank to bank. Widely known for its grandeur and beauty, Jiktangpokpo Falls is one of the 8 scenic wonders of Cheorwon. It is an ideal summer vacation spot and visitors can enjoy the savory maeuntang (spicy seafood stew) made with freshwater fish at one of the many restaurants located in the vicinity.

Jeungsan Beach (증산해변(증산 해수욕장))

Gangwondo Jeungsan-dong, Samcheok-si, Gangwon-do A small and quiet beach, Jeungsan Beach is located four kilometers away from downtown Samcheok. With an average depth of one to two meters, it attracts many vacationers in the summer. The beach's close proximity to Chuam Beach allows visitors to take in the view of Chotdaebawi Rock as well as beautiful sunrise. In winter, flock of seagulls flying over the ocean is a sight to see.

Jeongseon Morundae Cliff (몰운대 (정선))

Gangwondo 1330, Yaksu-gil, Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do Morundae Cliff is one of the Eight Scenic Sites of Hwaam. The tip of the steep cliff is adorned with three specimens of 500-year-old pine trees. Legend has it that gods would perch on the cliff’s top and enjoy the beautiful view. At the foot of the cliff lies a large sheet of rock that can accommodate hundreds of people.

Jeongdongjinhaebyeon Beach (정동진해변)

Gangwondo 17 Jeongdongyeok-gil, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do Jeongdongjinhaebyeon Beach is a nice, sandy beach with three major swimming spots: in front of Jeongdongjin Station, by Sandglass Park, and by the Jeongdongjin Breakwater. The spots near the railway station and by the park are more popular because they are spacious and easy to reach. The numerous rocks in front of Jeongdongjin Station are home to shellfish, mussels, sea urchins, and edible seaweed. Jeondongjin Station is known to be one of the stations closest to the ocean in the world. It is also a well-known sunrise spot, attracting crowds of sunrise spectators. The Jeongdongjin Sunrise Tourist Train has become a crowd favorite as well, ever since its premiere run in 1997.

Jeombongsan Mountain Gombaeryeong Pass (점봉산 곰배령)

Gangwondo 12 Gombaeryeong-gil, Girin-myeon, Inje-gun, Gangwon-do This ecological area at the summit of Jeombongsan Mountain, situated 1,100 meters above sea level, spans approximately 16.5 hectares. It is often referred to as the "garden of heaven" due to the sheer diversity of plants and wildflowers in the area. The trail leading to the pass has a relatively gentle slope, making it accessible to all. It extends for 10.5 kilometers and typically takes about four hours to complete. Visitors need to make reservations to visit the pass.

Jangsahang Port (장사항)

Gangwondo 58 Jangsahanghaean-gil, Sokcho-si, Gangwon-do Jangsahang Port is one of the representative ports of Sokcho. Visitors can experience boat fishing and visit various seafood restaurants to enjoy freshly caught raw fish and other sea food. Each summer, the Jangsa Fishing Experience Village hosts the Squid Catching Festival, attracting many visitors to this place. During the festival, visitors can experience the fun of squid catching with their bare hands and participate in various squid-themed experiences such as squid tasting, squid ink calligraphy, and squid storytelling.
