Gangwondo 100 Naksansa-ro, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do This ancient temple was built in the 11th year of King Munmu’s reign of Silla (671) by the Buddhist monk Uisang. Naksansa Temple is one of the foremost sights of Yangyang, and one of the most historic sites in the region. Along with Ganghwa’s Bomunsa Temple and Namhae’s Boriam Hermitage, it is said to be one of the three centers of the cult of Avalokitesvara in Korea. Its handsome view overlooking the East Sea has earned it a spot in the Eight Sights of Gwandong (eight famous sights in Yeongdong region of Gangwon-do), documented throughout the ages in many classic literature and poetry. Today’s Naksansa Temple is a product of many restorations and expansions, and has many examples of cultural heritage within its walls, including a 16 meter-tall statue of the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. A mountain fire in 2005 resulted in the loss of 20 buildings, including the building that housed its bronze bell. The temple also operates templestay programs available through its website.

Naksan Provincial Park (낙산도립공원)

Gangwondo 59, Haemaji-gil, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do Naksan Provincial Park takes up 24km of shoreline in Yangyang, Gangwon-do. The park is centered on Naksansa Temple and Naksan Beach, but includes Osan, Dongho, and Hajodae Beaches, as well as many lakes and cliffs. The park is a great place to learn about Korean culture, including Buddhist culture at Naksansa Temple and other cultural relics, and the shoreline cliffs of pine trees. The park is a popular attraction in the summer, when visitors can swim in the ocean and play in the sand along the coast.

Naksan Beach (낙산해수욕장)

Gangwondo 59 Haemaji-gil, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do Naksan Beach is one of the most famous beaches in Yangyang, located in Joseon-ri, Yangyang-eup, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do. Since its opening in 1963, it has attracted more than 1 million visitors each year, its reputation being rivaled only by the Gyeongpodae Beach on the east coast of Korea. The 4 kilometer-long sand beach contrasts magnificently with the lush pine trees of the area. The water is less than 1.5 meter deep, making it a good place for all ages. Naksanhang Port marks one end of the beach, behind which Naksan Mountain, the location of Naksansa Temple, can be found. The other end has a lake formed at the delta of Namdaecheon Stream, which originates from Seoraksan Mountain. Many cafes, convenience stores, restaurants, and accommodations cater to the needs of the visitors. The beach sees considerable traffic in winter as well, when it serves as a popular venue for sunrise-watching, particularly for the New Year’s Day festival.

Oeongchihaebyeon Beach (외옹치해변)

Gangwondo 596-2 Daepo-dong, Sokcho-si, Gangwon-do Oeongchihaebyeon Beach is a small white sand beach with a length of 400 meters and a x_width of 50 meters, located between Sokchohaebyeon Beach and Daepohang Port. If you want to enjoy the peaceful waters of Sokcho, this is the place to go. The beach is open for swimming in the summer, and you can easily buy and enjoy freshly prepared raw fish from the nearby Oeongchi Port. Facilities such as restrooms and parking area are available.

Odaesan Woljeongsa Needle Fir Forest Trail (오대산 월정사 전나무숲길)

Gangwondo 374-8 , Odaesan-ro, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do This forest trail stretches about 1 kilometer from Iljumun Gate of Woljeongsa Temple in Odaesan Mountain to Geumgang Bridge. The trail has 1,700 fir trees stretching high into the sky and is a tourist attraction representing Woljeongsa Temple, a temple with a thousand years of history. Many travelers visit Woljeongsa Temple to walk this forest path. The forest road, where the scent of phytoncide clears the body and mind, is always beautiful, but in winter, white snow falls on the green fir trees, making it even more wonderful. This trail is also well-known as a filming location for the drama "Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2017)." The scene where the goblin (played by Gong Yoo) and the bride (played by Kim Go-eun) confirm their love in a snowy fir tree forest was filmed here. It is said that the forest trail was first created when nine fir trees were planted in front of Woljeongsa Temple about 1,000 years ago. Fir trees have been commonly planted around temples since ancient times because they grow straight and fast and also play a role in fire prevention. Woljeongsa Temple, located at the end of the forest road, is a historic temple with a 1400-year history. Sansa (Buddhist monastery), with its lush mountain background, has many national treasures, including the octagonal nine-story stone pagoda of Woljeongsa Temple in Pyeongchang.

Gangwondo Buk-ri, Girin-myeon, Inje-gun, Gangwon-do Naerincheon River starts out as a small stream on Bungnyongsan Mountain and flows down Sogyebangsan Mountain before joining with other small valley streams to create the larger river that most people know. The river has created a valley with many interesting and uniquely shaped rocks as it flowed down the mountainside over the years. The waters are so pure, the small pebbles and sand lining the bottom of the stream can be seen clearly. There are a number of areas along the stream perfect for relaxing and enjoying some time in nature. Many families visit and enjoy fishing and the pure environment. The river is also well-known for rafting.

Noam Tunnel (노암터널)

Gangwondo Noam-dong, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do Noam Tunnel is a hidden attraction of Gangneung, stretching from Ipam-dong to Jungang Market. The old train tunnel was put out of use with the construction of the newer KTX line, and has now become a must-see attraction along the Gangneung Bau-gil Trail.

Murung Byeolyucheonji (무릉별유천지)

Gangwondo 97 Igi-ro, Donghae-si, Gangwon-do Mureung Byeolyucheonji was initially a limestone mine that opened in 1968. After 40 years of service as a mine, today it serves as a tourist attraction that boasts beautiful emerald lake and diverse activities. Mureung Byeolyucheonji gets its name from the rock-carved engravings in Mureunggyegok Valley and has the meaning "the place with the best view under the sky, a utopia away from the world." The attraction lives up to its name thanks to the beautiful surrounding mountain scenery pit lakes. Visitors can also enjoy the view from a different angle through diverse rides, such as the Sky Glider, Alpine Coaster, and more.

Mureunggyegok Valley (무릉계곡)

Gangwondo 538, Samhwa-ro, Donghae-si, Gangwon-do Mureunggyegok Valley, between Dutasan Mountain and Cheongoksan Mountain, refers to a four-kilometer stretch from Hoamso Pond to Yongchupokpo Falls upstream. The waters of Mureunggyegok Valley flow over wide sheets of rock and into the cracks between them, forming large and particularly nice ponds along the path. Starting at Mureung Rock, a wide sheet of single rock on which hundreds can sit, the valley trail twists and turns as it passes Samhwasa Temple, Haksodae, Ongnyudong, and Seonnyeotang Ravine, all the way to Ssangpokpo and Yongchupokpo Falls, providing breathtaking scenery along the way. Also known as Arcadia, scholars and poets frequented the valley in times past, and the 5,000 square meters of Mureung Rock bears the inscribed names of some of these poets and their work. The valley offers a medley of curious-looking rocks and stones, and other odd scenery that attracts many tourists.

Jangsudae Pavilion (장수대)

Gangwondo 4193, Seorak-ro, Inje-gun, Gangwon-do Jangsudae Pavilion was completed on October 1, 1959 to commemorate the great victory of the battle held at Seoraksan Mountain during the Korean War. It serves as a resting spot for visitors who hike up the park to visit attractions nearby such as the Daeseung Falls, Oknyeotang Spring, Gamatang Spring, Hangyesanseong Fortress, and Haneulbyeok Wall. The pavilion is built in a traditional Korean style and considered as an excellent hermitage in terms of both structure and size. The surrounding nature consisting of mountain cliffs and pine forest makes the building stand out even more.

Jangsahang Port (장사항)

Jangsahang Port is one of Sokcho’s most iconic ports. Visitors can enjoy boat fishing and savor freshly caught raw fish and other seafood at the many local restaurants. Every summer, the Jangsa Fishing Experience Village comes alive with the Squid Catching Festival, drawing countless visitors. Janghohang Port (장호항)

Gangwondo 103, Janghohang-gil, Samcheok-si, Gangwon-do Janghohang Port is a short distance out of downtown Samcheok. The port is famous for its round beach line and white sand shore and is known as the “Naples of Korea.” From the beach, Janghohang Port offers excellent views of unique rock formations in the sea. The beach at Janghohang Port is small but charming, and has a tranquil atmosphere unlike the bigger beaches.

Jageunhujinhaebyeon Beach (작은후진해수욕장)

Gangwondo 467 Saecheonnyeondo-ro, Samcheok-si, Gangwon-do Jageunhujinhaebyeon Beach, situated adjacent to Samcheokhaebyeon Beach, provides a serene and picturesque setting. Its proximity to Samcheok Port allows visitors easy access to fresh hoe (sliced raw fish). Additionally, the Hujin Breakwater, located right beside the beach, is an ideal spot for fishing enthusiasts.
