Gyeongsangbukdo 330, Jukgye-ro 315beon-gil, Yeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do In search of a great place to build a Buddhist Temple invoking national security, Great Monk Uisang travelled around the country and reached this place. He built a small thatched hut here for a temporary stay and continued his search. Finally, he found a perfect place and built Buseoksa Temple. He also set up another temple in the site where his small thatched hut was and called it Choamsa Temple. Choamsa Temple is located below the valley in the south of Gungmangbong Peak of Sobaeksan Mountain. After the Korean War, the temple building had to be rebuilt, but it managed to preserve some of Provincial Tangible Cultural Asset including Samcheung Seoktap (a three-storied stone pagoda; Tangible Cultural Property 126), Dongbudo (East Stupa; Tangible Cultural Property 128) and Seobudo (West Stupa; Tangible Cultural Property 129). * Jukgyegugok Valley The valley stretching from Baejeom-ni to Choamsa Temple is called Jukgyegugok which Sobaeksan Mountain surrounds like a folding screen. Near the valley, one can find famous tourist attractions such as the Sosuseowon Confucian Academy and Buseoksa Temple. Toegye Yi Hwang came up with the name Jukgyegugok inspired by the fantastic scenery of the valley and the beautiful sound of the flowing water.

Jeollabukdo 611-34, Sanbuk-ri, Wanju-gun, Jeonbuk-do Daedunsan Mountain is defined by the grandiose rock peaks of Macheondae Summit, Chilseongbong, Janggunbong, and Ambong Peaks, as well as surrounding strange rocks and lush trees that fill the area including Samseonbawi Rock, Yongmungol Valley and Geumgangmun Gate. The area spanning from Macheondae Peak to Nakjodae Peak along the northern ridge offers a magnificent view, especially of the sunrise and sunset from Nakjodae. Since its designation as a provincial park in 1977, Daedunsan Provincial Park has served as a scenic site equipped with recreational facilities including a cable car and Geumgang Suspension Bridge. A 5-minute cable car ride followed by a walk up the steep stairs leads to the suspension bridge, stretching 50 meters from Imgeumbawi Rock to Ipseokdae Pedestal. The park is also home to historic temples including Taegosa Temple of Jinsan, Ansimsa Temple of Unju, and Sinsounsa Temple of Byeolgok.

Daedunsan Provincial Park (Geumsan Section) (대둔산도립공원 (금산))

Chungcheongnamdo 2, Daedunsan-ro, Geumsan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do While the Wanju section of Daedunsan Provincial Park is more developed and rather larger than the Geumsan section, Geumsan has the distiction of being home to Taegosa Temple, the most important hertiage of the mountain. Daedunsan Mountain features many unique rock formations and small peaks with a clean environment. There are lush forests and beautiful valleys that turn crimson with the arrival of fall. Additional attractions of the park include a battlefield from the Imjin War (1592-1598), and Seokmun Gate, a stone gate before Taegosa Temple.

Chisanseowon Confucian Academy (치산서원)

Ulsan 7, Chisullyeong-gil, Dudong-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan Relics of Park Jesang is also referred to as Chisanseowon Confucian Academy. Park Jesang, a descendent of Park Hyeokgeose, was severly tortured and then burned to death after rescuing two hostages taken by Japan, who were the brothers of King Nulji. The nearby temple and Mangbuseok have a folk tale regarding the story. His wife and two daughters died waiting for him and then his wife is said to have turned into Mangbuseok (faithful wife stone) in the eastern Chisullyeong Mountain in Manhwa-ri, Dudong-myeon. According to the legend, her spirit became a bird, and flew away to hide behind Euneulam (Bird Hidden Rock). After Park Jesang's couragous act, King Nulji gave him a loyal officers position as well as the role of godmother to his wife for her model behavior of wifely duty. Chisanseowon Confucian Academy keeps their ancestral tablets to honor royalty.

Daedundo Island (대둔도)

Jeollanamdo 57, Gimisu-gil, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do Daedundo Island is located 94 kilometers northwest of Mokpo and 3.2 kilometers away from Daeheuksando Island. The highest point of the island is Seongamsan Mountain at 163 meters, but with various steep edges. Various vegetables as well as seafood can been found throughout the island.

Chiryeongyegok Valley (칠연계곡)

Jeollabukdo 608, Chiryeon-ro, Muju-gun, Jeonbuk-do Chiryeongyegok Valley is situated behind Tongan Village in Anseong-myeon near Deogyusan Mountain. While not as famous as the valley in Gucheon-dong, the valley boasts a beautiful array of waterfalls, oddly shaped rocks, and ponds. The best known attraction is Chiryeonpokpo Falls, meaning “seven falls connected to pools.” There, pure water flows gently, moving from one pool to the next.

Daedong Sky Park (대동하늘공원)

Daejeon 182, Dongdaejeon-ro 110beon-gil, Dong-gu, Daejeon Daedong Sky Park was formed as part of the Rainbow Project on December 2009. A giant windmill, which represents the park, is located 127 meters above sea level. Visitors can see an amazing panoramic view of the city as well as relax at one of the many benches and pagodas. A mural village connected to the Sky Park offers themed coffee shops and has become a popular attraction.

Daecheongho Lake (대청호)

Daejeon Dong-gu, Daejeon / Munui-myeon, Chungcheongbuk-do Daecheongho Lake is a man-made lake, stretching from Daejeon to Cheongju-si, Okcheon-gun, and Boeun-gun. Construction began in 1975 and finished in 1980, and the lake supplies water for various use to people in Daejeon and Cheongju. The reservoir water spans an area of over 72.8 ㎢ with a perimeter of 80 kilometers, and the water kept in storage has a volume of 1.5 billion tons, making the reservoir the third largest lake in Korea. The area is famous for its beautiful driving course along a tree-lined road through the nearby mountain which has an altitude of 200 to 300 meters. Also, resident birds and migratory birds, such as white heron, can be seen during summer in the upper region of the lake.

Daecheongdo Island (대청도)

Incheon Daecheong-myeon, Ongjin-gun, Incheon Daecheongdo Island, with an area of 12.7 square kilometers and 24.7 kilometers in length, houses a little over 1,000 citizens. The island is located 202 kilometers northwest of Incheon and is known for fishing. With most of the villagers being fishermen, the whole island is one large fishing area. The island is also known for clean air and various tourist attractions.

Chimyeongjasan Holy Ground (치명자산성지)

Jeollabukdo 89, Baramssoeneun-gil, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeonbuk-do Chimyeongjasan is a sacred site for those of the Catholic faith and a famous pilgrimage attraction in the southeastern region of Jeonju. Perched upon a steep ridge of Seungamsan Mountain behind Hanbyeokdang Pavilion, the area is the final resting place of well-known Catholic couple Yu Jung-cheol (John), Yi Sun-I (Rugalda), who vowed to remained virgins for all eternity. Situated upon the couple’s grave is “Miracle Rock,” a naturally formed rock that is said to be shaped like Jesus and the Virgin Mary. The site is also home to a 4-meter-high stone cross that can be seen from as far away as Hanbyeokdang Pavilion. The 200-meter prayer hike named “The Golgotha Way of the Cross” is one of the most popular pilgrimage routes for Catholics visiting the mountain area. Leading up from the parking lot and Monmartre Square (rest place), the entire path to the summit is strewn with flowers, making the prayer walk an ideal place for a stroll and some quiet meditation.

Chilpo Beach (칠포해수욕장)

Gyeongsangbukdo Heunghae-eup, Buk-gu, Pohang-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do Chilpo Beach is celebrated for its four kilometers of white sand and crystal-clear waters. The shallow waters near the beach, approximately one meter deep, are ideal for children, while further out, the depth reaches adult shoulder level, making it suitable for swimmers of all ages. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a scenic trek along the wooden deck at the beach's end, offering splendid views of the East Sea. Since 2007, the beach has become even more renowned for hosting the Chilpo Jazz Festival every September. This event presents a unique opportunity to experience live jazz music by the sea, adding a musical charm to the autumn ambiance.

Daecheong Dam Observatory (대청댐 전망대)

At the site is Water Culture Center that offers various things to see relating to the dam as well as informational visual aids related to water. Gyeongsangbukdo Gasan-ri, Chilgok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do Gasansanseong Fortress in Chilgok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do is located in the middle of Chilgok-gun, between Daegu Metropolitan City and Gumi. Gasansan Mountain (901m in elevation) is 10 kilometers west of Palgongsan Mountain. Because it boasts seven peaks, the mountain was called Chilbongsan Mountain. After enduring foreign invasions, including the Imjin War (1592-1598) and the Qing invasion of Joseon (1636), the Joseon rulers built a fortress over the course of 100 years to aid in Korea’s defense. It is Korea’s only three-layered fortress, consisting of inner, outer and central walls. The flat Gasanbawi Rock at the mountain’s peak, which is large enough to accommodate 100 people at a time, offers a great view of Daegu Metropolitan City.

Daecheong Dam (대청댐)

Chungcheongbukdo 618-136, Daecheong-ro, Daedeok-gu, Daejeon Daecheong Dam is a multi-purpose dam consisting of a 72 meter-tall and 495 meter-long concrete gravity dam and rockfill dam. It is located on the Geumgang River where Daejeon and Chungcheongbuk-do meet. There are three additional support dams in the area of the main dam to help control the river's flow. The dam also serves as a power source for the nearby areas of Daejeon and Cheongju. Construction of the dam took nearly six years, started in March 1975 and completed in 1980. The observatory, located at Palgakjeong Service Area, offers a great view of Daecheongho Lake. A variety of fascinating items are displayed in the Water Culture Center on the left bank of Daecheong Dam. A nearby grassy meadow promises a relaxing and comfortable rest, while local delicacies such as spicy fish stew using freshwater fish and marinated grilled eel are a delight to taste.

Chilgapsan Recreational Forest (칠갑산자연휴양림)

Chungcheongnamdo 668-103, Chilgapsal-ro, Cheongyang-gun, Chungcheongnam-do Chilgapsan Recreational Forest opened in 1990 within a lush natural forest. The park offers many amenities to enjoy a relaxing time in nature. Overnight guests can stay in a cabin, complete with heating, a kitchen, and shower, or camp in the campground. The forest is also capable of hosting retreats, with training buildings and a lecture hall. Day visitors can enjoy the many walking trails and hiking paths, as well as a water playground and observation decks. The forest is located next to Chilgapsan Provincial Park, with many valleys in the area for more time in nature, as well as Cheonjangho Lake and Modeoksa Temple.
