Gangwondo 760 Jajangnamusup-gil, Inje-gun, Gangwon-do Wondae-ri Birch Forest near Inje-eup is an exemplar of natural eco-tourism, established by planting 690,000 birch trees across 138 hectares from 1974 to 1995. Today, 25 hectares of this expansive area serve as a forest experience center tailored for children. Two main trails are available: the Wonjeong Forest Trail, with an 80-minute walking time, and the shorter Wondae Forest Trail, taking about an hour to traverse. The trails lead hikers through a dense forest of birch trees, some over two decades old, whose stark white trunks reach skyward, creating an ethereal atmosphere. This forest not only offers a journey through its unique ecosystem but also provides aesthetic pleasure and educational opportunities, securing its status as a distinguished eco-tourism site in Inje-gun. In winter, the snow-blanketed landscape alongside the stark white birches creates a picturesque tableau, making it a favored spot for photography. Woljeongsa Temple & Needle Fir Forest (월정사.월정사전나무숲)

Gangwondo 374-8 Odaesan-ro, Jinbu-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do Woljeongsa Temple, established in 643 during the Silla dynasty, is located on Odaesan Mountain. It's renowned for its historical and cultural treasures, including an octagonal nine-story stone pagoda from the Goryeo era. A tranquil pathway, approximately 1 kilometer long, extends from Woljeongsa's Iljumun Gate to Geumganggyo Bridge, lined with over 1,700 fir trees, creating an ideal setting for peaceful walks. Additionally, the temple offers various Buddhist programs and Templestay experiences.

Villa of Rhee Syngman (이승만별장(고성))

Gangwondo 33, Iseungmanbyeoljang-gil, Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do During the 1950's, three leaders, namely Kim Ilsung, Rhee Syngman and Lee Ki-poong had summer houses built around the lake of Hwajinpo. The villa of Rhee Syngman, Korea's first president, was built in 1954 but fell into a state of disuse by 1961. It was not repaired until July of 1997 by the army, and was fully restored in 1999, opening as an exhibition hall.

Villa of Lee Ki-poong (이기붕별장)

Gangwondo 300-1, Hwajinpo-gil, Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do The villa of Lee Ki-poong is located between the villas of Rhee Syngman and Kim Ilsung on the shores of Hwajinpo Lake. The villa was originally built by foreign missionaries in the 1920s. It was used as vacation villa by the Northern communist party's executives before the Korean War broke out, and was turned into a private residence by Lee, the Vice-president to President Rhee, and his wife Maria Park after the cease-fire agreement.

Unification Security Park (통일안보공원)

Gangwondo 481 Geumgangsan-ro, Hyeonnae-myeon, Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do Unification Security Park serves as the entry point to the Unification Observatory. Before entering the observatory, visitors can watch a video at the Education Security Hall, which has a seating capacity of 700 people. In front of the Education Security Hall, stands the Peace Bell, a symbol of hope for peaceful reunification. Additionally there is a monument commemorating the army unit members who sacrificed their lives to stop the invasion of North Korean guerillas just before the Korean War. ◎ Due to its location within the Civilian Control Line area, visitors must complete the required procedures before entering.

Gangwondo 5110 Donghae-daero, Toseong-myeon, Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do Misiryeong Pass, historically a pathway connecting Inje to Sokcho, also serves as an observation point for viewing Ulsanbawi Rock in Seoraksan Mountain. More recently, it has gained popularity as a photo spot for capturing the Milky Way. As a result, on clear nights, the parking lot is often filled with eager photographers.

Uisangdae Pavilion (낙산사 의상대)

Gangwondo 100 Naksansa-ro, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do This pavilion is located on a seaside cliff on the way from Yangyang’s Naksansa Temple to Gwaneumgul Cave of Hongnyeonam Hermitage. The word “dae” in Uisangdae refers to a building built at a vantage point for areas with beautiful scenery. Indeed, the view of the East Sea and the coast from Uisangdae Pavilion awarded its recognition as one of the Eight Sights of Yangyang, and a must-visit place for all visitors to Naksansa Temple. Jeong Cheol (pen-name: Songgang), a famed scholar and writer of the poem Song of Diamond Mountains, chose the pavilion as one of the Eight Sights of Gwandong, and the pavilion is today one of the popular sites for sunrise-viewing on the east coast of Korea. Together with Hongnyeonam Hermitage, it is designated as the Scenic Site No. 27 of Korea under the name “Uisangdae Pavilion and Hongnyeonam Hermitage of Naksansa Temple, Yangyang.” Uisangdae is named after Uisang, a respected Silla-era Buddhist monk who is said to have founded this temple in 671 (11th year of King Munmu’s reign of Silla), and many stories of his deeds can still be found in the temple. For instance, Uisangdae is said to be the site where he meditated before founding Naksansa Temple at its present site. Today’s pavilion was restored to its present hexagonal form in 1995.

Ttansan Mountain (딴산)

Gangwondo Hwacheon-eup, Hwacheon-gun, Gangwon-do Located just four kilometers away from Hwacheon-eup, Ttansan Mountain is nestled between Paroho Lake and the entrance to Peace Dam, making it appear more like an island floating on the water rather than a mountain. This small island-like mountain offers an interesting and unique setting and the nearby mountains provide a cooling effect with its shadows on the water creating a relaxing resting area.

Tomb of Sin Sunggyeom (장절공신숭겸장군묘역)

Gangwondo 272-21, Sinsunggyeom-ro, Seo-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do Tomb of Sin Sung-gyeom (posthumous epithet: Jangjeolgong), a founding contributor of the Goryeo Dynasty Sin Sung-gyeom made a great contribution to the foundation of Goryeo by expelling Gung Ye and crowning Wang Geon (later, King Taejo) as a king in 918, together with Bae Hyeon-gyeong, Hong Yu, and Bok Ji-gyeom. When Taejo of Goryeo was surrounded by the army of Gyeon Hwon (founder of Later Baekje) at the Palgongsan Battle in Daegu, Sin exchanged armor with Taejo’s armor to disguise himself as the king and died. The enemy thought that he was Taejo and beheaded him, and Taejo made his head with gold in sorrow and held a funeral for him. The Tomb of Sin Sung-gyeom consists of three mounds, which are said to have been a measure that Taejo took lest the golden head should be stolen. The location of the tomb is regarded as one of the best propitious sites for a grave in Korea, based on geomancy. Surrounded by pine trees, this site overlooks downtown Chuncheon. The tombstone, shrine, and memorial stone were built around the tomb. This tomb was designated as Gangwon-do Monument No. 21 under the title “Sin jangjeolgong Myoyeok (Tomb of Sin Sung-gyeom),” while the memorial stone, bearing the story of the Palgongsan Battle and Sin Sung-gyeom’s performance, was designated as Gangwon-do’ Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 155.

Gangwondo 79 Hajodaehaean-gil, Hyeonbuk-myeon, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do Located at Yangyang's Hajodae Beach, also known as the “Surfer Beach,” this rooftop restaurant offers stunning ocean views. Facing the sea, guests can enjoy the seascape as if admiring a work of art. The outdoor area is designed to allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in nature, taking in the soothing sounds of the waves and the expansive sea views. The restaurant's signature dish is the haesanmul jjamppong pasta (spicy seafood pasta). The menu also includes a variety of a la carte items and set menus, catering to diverse tastes.

The Literary Village of Kim You Jeong (김유정문학촌)

Gangwondo 1430-14, Gimyujeong-ro, Sindong-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do The Literary Village of Kim You Jeong was established on the site of the birth home of Kim, in order to commemorate Kim You-jeong who left various great short story novels of Korea’s modern times, such as Spring, Spring (1935), and Camellia Flower (1936). It was opened in 2002, consisting of the Birth Home of Kim You-jeong, Memorial Hall, foot-operated mortar, etc. Then, in 2016, various facilities, such as Kim You-jeong’s Story House, outdoor stage, experience room, and Nangman Nuri were additionally built across the Literary Village of Kim You-jeong. The current birth home with the square-shaped structure, which is the typical hanok (traditional Korean house) style, was restored according to historical research by Kim’s relatives and students. The Memorial Hall provides information and displays artifacts related to Kim You-jeong’s life and works. Kim You-jeong’s Story House shows three-dimensional exhibits and videos related to his works and life. Various sculptures made with the themes of Kim’s short story novels are placed throughout its outside area. It is recommended to walk along the Sille Story Road after visiting the Literary Village. The Sille Story Road is a trail, which is a literature tour, consisting of the places that appeared in Kim’s novels with the background of his hometown.

The 4th Tunnel (제4땅굴)

Gangwondo Ihyeon-ri, Yanggu-gun, Gangwon-do The 4th Tunnel was discovered on March 3, 1990. It is located 1,200 meters from the Military Demarcation Line in the demilitarized zone of South Korea. This is the only tunnel to be discovered that provides full access to tour groups. Educational instruction is given in the square outside the tunnel.

The 2nd Tunnel (제2땅굴(철원))

Gangwondo Yangji-ri, Dongsong-eup, Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do The 2nd Tunnel, one of several excavated by North Korea for the purpose of infiltrating South Korea, was discovered in 1975. Spanning a total length of 3.5 kilometers, only 500 meters of the tunnel is accessible to civilians. To visit this site, visitors are required to book as part of the DMZ Peace Tours. Additionally, personal identification, such as a passport or Alien Registration Card (ARC), is necessary for access.

Taebaeksan National Park (태백산 국립공원)

Gangwondo 4778, Taebaeksan-ro, Taebaek-si, Gangwon-do Taebaeksan Mountain range encompasses several peaks such as Yeongbong Peak (alt. 1,560 m), where in the past, people would conduct rites to venerate Heaven at Cheonjedan Altar; Janggunbong Peak (alt. 1,567 m), Munsubong Peak (alt. 1,517 m), and its summit of Hambaeksan Mountain (alt. 1,572 m). Taebaeksan Mountain serves as a home to diverse wild animals and plants, including several endangered species. The higher plains are covered with alpine vegetation. The mountain becomes hot pink with mountain rhododendron and azalea in the spring; green with thick forest and pristine waters in the summer; rainbow colored with changing leaves in the fall; and white with snow in the winter.
